Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is quite often misunderstood and confused with Counselling by many people.  Psychotherapy and Counseling have a lot in common, but counselling is not psychotherapy.  A Counsellor usually helps you reach a realization, a plan or a decision.  A Psychotherapist provides or helps you create an "environment filled with activities" that bring about change – almost like exercise.

PsychotherapyPsychotherapy is a process that involves you, with the help of a qualified, ethical and caring person, to look at your existing thought processes and behaviours and recognise,  which of these thoughts and behaviours are having a negative effect  on you and consequently your ability to get the most out of your life.

Your behaviours can be thoughts, actions, a memory, something you say, or an emotion.  All of these require ‘work’ and effort on your part to solve them.  This work involves re-directing and changing your thoughts.

In order to help you alter your behaviours, a psychotherapist will help you to look at past and early childhood experiences, because most behaviours are ‘learned responses’.  Looking at early childhood helps to pinpoint where you first learned to think and behave in the way that you do.  Once these have been understood and unravelled, your therapist will give you strategies to help change your present behaviour.  Consequently, you will then be able to identify and express your true potential and begin to recognise your talents and strengths.

Problems that respond well to Psychotherapy are:

Lack of Awareness or Insight:

Sometimes we fail to see the patterns and choices we make and the consequences that these hold for us.  In order to help solve our problems we must create an understanding of them so that we can then create the solutions. We need to recognise that we 'always' have choices and when and where to make these choices.

Avoidance:

Many peoples problems are the result of an unpleasant experience.  We then change our behaviour in order to avoid or escape from the experience or the memory of it.

Secondary Gain/Hidden Agenda:

Sometimes the unwanted behaviour has a ‘payoff’.  You may not recognise the 'payoff', neither may your family, friends or others.  You may even deny the existence of a ‘payoff’ or benefit.  However, with every negative there is a positive, and these can include, extra care and attention, emotional support, or avoidance of something.  A therapist will help you to understand that there are more beneficial ways of getting or keeping the ‘perceived benefits’ of holding onto a negative behaviour or thought pattern.

Misunderstandings of Human Difference:

There are huge differences to be found between the genders, these misunderstandings lead to assumptions and expectations that are unrealistic.  For example, men and women hold perceptions how each should behave in a relationship or in life generally and this often leads to unecessary friction in the relationship, purely as a result of these misconceptions.  Once we act on these erroneous assumptions we store problems up for ourselves.  Therapy can help you to fully understand, respect and respond appropriately to these gender differences giving you more realistic expectations.

Erroneous Thinking:

Many of the actions we take are based on partial information or our mistaken beliefs.  By examining the way we think and consequently behave, we are more able to once again respond appropriately.

Recognise some of these issues?  Ready to do something about it?  Having the courage to take action is the 1st and most important step to improving your life and having the life you deserve.
